Theatre Company

Company History

In 1994 a group of artists were invited by Patrick Christopher-Carter, Jean Morpurgo and Elizabeth Murphy to perform TWELFTH NIGHT in Point PleasantPark on a volunteer basis. With no publicity other than word-of-mouth, these performance attracted an audience of over 2,500 in just one weekend. With this resounding support from the community and excellent critical notices, Shakespeare by the Sea Theatre Society was incorporated on September 19, 1994.  Jean Morpurgo left the company in 1996.  Mr. Christopher-Carter remained as Artistic Director until his sudden death on July 18, 2005.  Two  Associate Directors have had a significant impact on the company:  Matthew Kutas from 1995-2000 and Jesse MacLean from 2003-2005.  Mr. MacLean still returns each season to direct a show.  In 2006, Jennie Raymond and Elizabeth Murphy acted as Co-Artistic Directors for one season.  In October of 2006, Elizabeth Murphy was appointed Artistic Director.
