Shakespeare By The Sea is hiring crew and staff in support of the upcoming 2023 professional summer theatre season. The following positions are available (please click on the job title to see full details):

Shakespeare by the Sea performs outdoors in Point Pleasant Park, located in K'jipuktuk (Halifax, NS). SBTS productions run in repertory, with actors appearing in multiple productions.

 

Shakespeare by the Sea seeks to create theatre that is inviting, inclusive, and accessible to all. In seeking to gather an ensemble that reflects the diverse community we serve, we strongly encourage submissions from artists of diverse cultural backgrounds, and will be prioritizing submissions from applicants who self-identify as members of underrepresented communities.

At this time SBTS is holding interviews in K'jipuktuk (Halifax, NS). Folks unable to attend an interview in K’jipuktuk are welcome to submit, and may be invited to interview via zoom.

ASSOCIATE PRODUCER

RATE OF PAY: $800/wk

LENGTH OF CONTRACT: 15 weeks

CONTRACT DATES: May 29 - Sept 9, 2023

HIRING RESTRICTIONS: ***This is a Canada Summer Jobs position. Applicants must be 30 years of age or under.***

JOB DESCRIPTION: Reporting to the Managing Artistic Director, the Associate Producer plays a major role in producing the 2023 season and surrounding events. The Associate Producer is directly involved in the day-to-day management of the summer season operations, and acts as a liaison between various departments, coordinating and facilitating the work schedule of the design and production teams and assisting with their budget management and reconciliation. The Associate Producer also works with the Front of House/Box Office team to ensure smooth operations at the performance venue, and oversees the creation of daily/weekly sales reports. Working with the PR/Media Manager, the Associate Producer will advise on the execution of publicity strategies and schedules for producing digital and print media content.

COSTUME DESIGNER

RATE OF PAY: $750/wk 

LENGTH OF CONTRACT:  8 weeks

CONTRACT DATES: May 29 - July 23, 2023

HIRING RESTRICTIONS: ***This is a Canada Summer Jobs position. Applicants must be 30 years of age or under.*** 

JOB DESCRIPTION: The Costume Designer is responsible for the design and creation of all costumes for the 2022 season.  This will involve creating 20-30 costumes for two productions, some pulled from stock and reimagined, some brand new designs.  In consultation with the two show directors, the concept of the costumes will be discussed and approved.  The Designer will be the Dept. Head and have an assistant.  The Designer will report to the Managing Director and the Production Stage Manager. Both Designer and Assistant positions should be familiar with, and able to work on professional sewing equipment.

TECHNICAL DIRECTOR

RATE OF PAY: $750/wk

LENGTH OF CONTRACT: 9 Weeks

CONTRACT DATES: May 29 - July 30, 2023

HIRING RESTRICTIONS: ***This is a Canada Summer Jobs position. Applicants must be 30 years of age or under.***

JOB DESCRIPTION: Reporting to the Production Stage Manager (PSM),  this position will work with the Directing, Design and Acting teams to coordinate the technical needs (lights, sound, staging) of the shows through the rehearsal period. With the PSM, the Technical Director will assist with the planning of the set up and strike of the performance venue, including lighting and sound package, set pieces and properties. Once shows are opened they will supervise and maintain all the equipment, stocks of scenery and properties.

FRONT OF HOUSE MANAGER

RATE OF PAY: $700/wk

LENGTH OF CONTRACT: 10 weeks

CONTRACT DATES: June 26 - Sept 3, 2023

HIRING RESTRICTIONS: ***This is a Canada Summer Jobs position. Applicants must be 30 years of age or under.***

JOB DESCRIPTION: This position reports directly to the Managing Artistic Director and Associate Producer and is responsible for overseeing all “Front-Of-House” activities at each performances (6 shows/per week), providing excellent customer service to patrons, and handling cash and card transactions for ticket sales and concessions, maintaining a cash float and creating daily transaction reports. The Front of House Manager will work as a team with Box Office Manager to share information about ticket sales and seating charts, and help to recruit and manage volunteers to assist with seating audiences. The job will include a small amount of physical labour, involved with the setup/strike of the Front of House tent before and after each performance.

MEDIA COORDINATOR

RATE OF PAY: $750/wk

LENGTH OF CONTRACT: 14 weeks

CONTRACT DATES: May 29 - Sept 3, 2023

HIRING RESTRICTIONS: ***This is a Canada Summer Jobs position. Applicants must be 30 years of age or under.***

JOB DESCRIPTION: This position reports directly to the Managing Artistic Director and the Season Producer and will be responsible for coordinating all public relations activities for the 2023 summer season. Duties include developing a marketing communications plan including strategy, goals, budget and tactics for marketing the season. There is much room for individual creativity, while working within the brand guidelines of the company. The Media Coordinator will seek high-level placements in print, broadcast and online/social media,  as well as taking on projects of their own using photography and video skills.

COSTUME ASSISTANT

RATE OF PAY: $676/wk

LENGTH OF CONTRACT: 12 weeks

CONTRACT DATES: June 12 - Sept 3, 2023

HIRING RESTRICTIONS: ***Applicants must be returning students at a Nova Scotia post-secondary institution***

JOB DESCRIPTION: This position reports directly to the Costume Designer and will assist the Costume Designer in all aspects of building costumes for the 2022 season. The Costume Assistant must be able to use professional sewing equipment, and must possess excellent time-management skills, with ability to work in a team environment or alone. After the opening of the summer season productions, the Costume Assistant will remain on staff and be responsible for upkeep and maintenance of the costumes through to the end of the season.

PRODUCTION ASSISTANT

RATE OF PAY: $676/wk

LENGTH OF CONTRACT: 12 weeks

CONTRACT DATES: June 12 - Sept 3, 2023

HIRING RESTRICTIONS: ***Applicants must be returning students at a Nova Scotia post-secondary institution***

JOB DESCRIPTION: The Production Assistant position will assist with all aspects of technical theatre, and report to the Production Stage Manager, during the 2023 summer season. Responsibilities will include building and maintaining set pieces and props, assisting with daily set-up and strike of the performance venue, hanging/focusing lighting equipment, assisting the Production Stage Manager with specific tasks during the running of the shows.

RATE OF PAY: $676/wk

LENGTH OF CONTRACT: 9 weeks

CONTRACT DATES: July 3 - Sept 3, 2023

HIRING RESTRICTIONS: ***Applicants must be returning students at a Nova Scotia post-secondary institution***

JOB DESCRIPTION: Reporting to the Associate Producer, this position will collaborate as a team with the Front of House Manager to oversee all patron-related activities during the 2023 professional summer theatre season at Shakespeare By The Sea. Responsibilities will include serving as the first point-of-contact for audience members as the arrive at the venue, providing excellent customer service to all patrons, creating seating charts and ticket sales reports, and helping with recruiting of volunteers to assist with seating audiences. The job will include a small amount of physical labour, involved with the setup/strike of the Front of House tent before and after each performance.

SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGER

RATE OF PAY: $676/wk

LENGTH OF CONTRACT: 12 weeks

CONTRACT DATES: June 12 - Sept 3, 2023

JOB DESCRIPTION: The Social Media Manager position will report to the Media Coordinator and Associate Producer, and be responsible for managing and creating content for the social media accounts at Shakespeare By The Sea during the 2023 summer season. The successful candidate will possess a strong working knowledge of various platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok) and will also be tasked with managing updates to the company website (hosted on the Wix platform). The Social Media Manager will collaborate with the Associate Producer and Media Coordinator on a public relations strategy, analyze social media interaction data, and work directly with the artists performing in the season to create daily content for our busy social media streams.
