A workshop series exploring the untold queer stories in Shakespearean text through a queer lens*
in association with Dapopo Theatre’ Queer Theatre Ensemble (QTE) and featuring an emerging group of Halifax-based theatre artists
*The Queer Theatre Ensemble defines queer as a tran-inclusionary, feminist-empowering term that encourages, and strives for, inclusion of traditionally marginalized demographics.
A new initiaitve introduced in 2019, and continuing in 2020, is a workshop series titled “Shakesqueer”, in association with Dapopo Theatre’ Queer Theatre Ensemble (QTE) and featuring an emerging group of Halifax-based theatre artists who are committed to exploring queer stories; themes; texts; and styles; and working as a collective; learning from the wider community; and practicing new skills. SBTS and the QTE have been exploring the untold queer stories in Shakespearean text through a queer lens, replacing the too often cisnormative and heteronormative lens placed upon art with a queer one, by exploring deviance in text, analysis, and performance.
These sessions are designed to develop a working vocabulary and philosophy that could be applied to future projects. Some of the themes that have been indentified as areas of interest for exploration during the workshop are queer love, gender roles/representation, and intersectionality in Shakespeare.
Shakesqueer was generously supported by Arts Nova Scotia. A second phase of the workshop has been supported by The Canada Council For The Arts, and will take place in the Fall of 2020.
